State police are covering a "pretty wide area" in their search for three armed men who robbed the Elkton branch of the Planters' Bank of Todd County of $40,000 shortly after noon Tuesday. W.C. Hight, dispatcher for the Madisonville state police post, said this morning detectives and patrolmen are concentrating much of their efforts in investigating all reports of abandoned vehicles in the counties surrounding Todd County. A car was found after the robbery under a bridge in the Guthrie area of Todd County, a mile north of the KentuckyTennessee border. The car had been reported stolen, state police said, and authorities said they believed that it and at leaet two more cars were used in the holdup.

The three men being sought entered the bank wearing masks and carrying two sawedoff shotguns and a pistol, according to bank manager Jerry McCuiston, and forced employes to give them money from the cash drawers and the vault. Early reports estimated $22,000 had been taken in the robbery, but McCuiston said a full auditing produced the $40,000 figure. There were no customers in the bank when the robbery began, McCuiston said, but one customer entered while it was in progress. No injuries were reported.
